School Observation and Consultation

School Observation and Consultation

Children and teens spend a significant amount of time in school and in school-based learning activities. For some students, it can be the hardest and most stressful part of their day. Many times, bright and wonderful students feel comfortable in some aspects of school, but may struggle in others.

School observation and consultation can help you:

  • Identify strengths and challenges during school
  • Explore structured versus less structured times (recess, lunch)
  • Develop behavior plans and specific strategies
  • Increase communication and teamwork across home, school, and therapy

Students benefit from school collaboration:

  • Build rapport and increase a shared understanding of the student
  • Establish a specific contact person (‘keyworker’) at school
  • Develop a list of accommodations
  • Track goals and progress over time
  • Plan ahead for stressors and transitions
