Meet the Confident Kids Camp DC Metro 2021 Team
Camp Director, CKC- DC
Dr. Scharfstein is a licensed Clinical Psychologist and Founder of the Rockville Therapy Center LLC. I am proud to bring the Confident Kids Camp for Selective Mutism to the DC metro area for the 2nd year! Our DC Metro camp motto is Using Fun to Override the Fears that children and families coping with Selective Mutism face. I offer practical, personalized, and collaborative care. Outside of work, I enjoy rocking climbing, hiking, outdoor events, and spending time with family, friends, and my dog! As you all already know, I cannot wait for camp this summer!
Younger Classroom Teacher
Dr. Susanna Crowell McQuarrie is a licensed clinical psychologist who received her degrees from Vanderbilt University and Georgia State University. She had the opportunity to be a camp counselor at Steve Kurtz’s Mighty Mouth Kids Camp held in New York City and is thrilled to be involved in the Confident Kids camp in the DC area. In her free time, Dr. McQuarrie enjoys crafting, cooking, and spending time with family outdoors. Dr. McQuarrie enjoys working with children with Selective Mutism on an individual basis and seeing their amazing bravery grow through treatment!
Older Classroom Teacher
A social worker and special educator currently practicing at Arbit Counseling, I specialize in working with children and teens with Selective Mutism, a passion that emerged when my own children were diagnosed with SM as preschoolers. I am co-author of the I Have a Question children’s book series, and write short picture stores to help kids manage daily challenges. During Covid, I rediscovered an affinity for jigsaw puzzles, reading and yoga! It has long been my goal to teach at an SM camp, and I could not be more excited to join Confident Kids Camp!
Catherine is a therapist at Bethesda Counseling Services. She earned her MSW from Columbia University in 2020 and also holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Montclair State University. Catherine’s interests focus on evidence-based therapies for youth. Catherine is enthusiastic about participating in the Confident Kids Camp this summer!
I received my Bachelor of Arts from NYU, where I studied Psychology with a focus on Child and Adolescent Mental Health. I’m a rising third year doctoral student in Clinical Psychology from The George Washington University, where I had the opportunity to offer psychotherapy services at a community mental health clinic and a local bilingual public school, as well as give psychodiagnostic assessments at a private practice in DC. In my free time, I enjoy being creative and making embroidered clothing pieces. I look forward to being a part of Camp this summer, learning from specialists in this field, and to building connections with children that experience Selective Mutism.
